Hi guys,
Who here hates split ends?
Do you know what they are?
Split ends are literally when the ends of your hair split up the hair strand due to damage or weathering.
Things that cause split ends:
Hot tools
Chemicals in hair dye and lightener
Not enough conditioner
Combing
So lets dive in!

Traditional Split
The MOST common type of split end. The results of dryness, friction and a host of other causes.

Baby Split
The beginning of a normal split end. Hurry up and cut this type of split before it worsens.

Triple Split
A weakened cuticle layer causes the cuticle to peel away from a strong cortex.

Double Y Split
A traditional split where the branches are forming new splits.

Long Split
Hair pins and other hair accessories cause the hair to weaken and split at a specific spot. Wearing your ponytail in the same spot will cause this.

Deep Split
Damage from chemicals or physical manipulation causes the cuticle to peel at a specific spot. Messy buns can be the cause.

Tapering
Chemical damage causes the cuticle to gradually peel away leaving the cortex exposed.

Thickening
Hormonal imbalances and certain medications cause texture changes along the hair shaft.

Incomplete Split
Rough styling causes the hair to weaken at a specific spot, but the hair fails to completely split.

White Spots
The result of severe chemical burns

Right Angle
A bend in the hair shaft at a specific point due to wearing the SAME hairstyle too often.

Offshoot
A cross between a bend and a tangle that results from chemical, heat, environmental, or physical damage.

Crinkle
The result of physically stretching the hair up to the breaking point or with chemical or hot tools.

Feather Split
-Photo mistake-
The result of excessive hair coloring or infrequent trimming.

Feathering
-Photo Mistake-
Caused by damage on one side of the hair shaft, usually from sun damage or frequent brushing the hair into a ponytail.

Knot
NOT A SPLIT END
Not a split end but can cause more knots, tangles, and other forms of damage. Usually the result of excessive dryness, physical manipulation, and harsh winds. Very common in curlier hair textures.
